Description The dataset consists of simulated carbon stocks of biomass and soil, and the annual change in these stocks. Biomass carbon stock (kg C m-2) is the amount of carbon stored in trees and ground vegetation of forest. Soil carbon stock (kg C m-2) is the amount of organic carbon stored in forest soil in a 100 cm deep soil layer. Carbon stock change (kg C m-2 year-1) is the annual change rate in the biomass and soil carbon stocks. The dataset covers mineral soils of forestry land in the Häme and Uusimaa regions in southern Finland in 2011. The spatial resolution of the data is 20x20 meters. Simulated time-series of biomass and soil carbon stock, and the changes in these stocks, were connected to spatially explicit information on forest characteristics using look-up tables. The validity of the estimates was tested by comparing them to extensive field measurements.

Description Biomass carbon stock was simulated over forest rotation using the Motti v. 3.3 forest stand simulator (Hynynen et al., 2014; Salminen et al., 2005), separately for each tree species and site type in the study region. Soil carbon stock was simulated over forest rotation using the Yasso15 soil carbon model (Järvenpää et al. 2016, manuscript in preparation). The litter input to the Yasso15 model was calculated based on the biomass estimates derived from the Motti v. 3.3 simulations. The annual change in the biomass and soil carbon stocks was calculated as the difference between the carbon stock values of subsequent years. The simulated time-series of carbon stocks and changes were connected to spatially explicit information on forest stand age derived from the Multisource National Forest Inventory 2011 (Katila and Tomppo, 2001; Tomppo et al., 2008; 2014) using look-up tables. Description To evaluate the reliability of the mapping framework approach, the simulated and measurement-based estimates of biomass and soil C stock were compared to each other. The measurement-based estimates of biomass were derived from the MS-NFI 2011 dataset. The simulated estimates of biomass C stock were compared to measurement-based means per stand age and municipality. The measurements of soil C stocks were derived from earlier studies from the same region (Liski and Westman, 1995; Rantakari et al., 2012). The simulated and measured means were compared by forest site type. Harvests reduce the biomass C stock and increase the soil C stock temporarily. The C stock changes were evaluated by comparing the estimated and measured mean harvests in 2011 per municipality. Harvests were estimated by subtracting the harvest residues entering the soil from the total harvest removal pixel by pixel. Harvest statistics were supplied by the Natural Resources Institute Finland. The mapping framework illustrates the present status of the C stocks and changes of boreal forests reasonably accurately according to the validity tests.
